I use a network management program called WhatsUp Gold (www.ipswitch.com)
which has a SNMP browser, from there I can poll any device and check the
instance number.

A program called GetIf will also do the same go to
http://www.wtcs.org/snmp4tpc/ and click on 'testing'.  It may be worth
browsing the site as there is quite a lot of information about MRTG and
SNMP.
