I too have used the APC product.  it is called the "Environmental Monitoring
Card" (was MeasureUPS) and fits in a slot in the back of the Matrix UPS.
Then you configure the UPS software (PowerChute +) to enable SNMP support.
After that (once you know the OIDs), you can monitor temp and humidity just
like everything else!  APC sells it off their web for $400.

If you already have an APC UPS, you might be able to get it going pretty
fast!

I have also used the contact switches (connected it to the alarm output on
my A/C unit).  That way, I got an alert BEFORE the temp started going up,
and could call the A/C repair company before I headed into work to turn on
the fans!
