a switch is a layer 2 device. You can only get the MAC address of a device
connected to a port.
To get the IP to MAC translation, you need to dump the ARP cache of the
router serving that segment.
A _great_ tool to do this is Kiwi's Cat Tool v 1.1.9

it effortlessly grabs the switch data and coordinates the router info into a
spreadsheet.

Subject: [mrtg] MRTG monitoring a switch: Can I label by IP?

Hello -

I have three Cisco switches, and I've set up MRTG to monitor the
traffic through each port. I've searched the Web and USENET, and
I've looked through the MRTG documentation, but there isn't much info
on switches that I've been able to find.

Does anyone here know if it's possible to find out, using SNMP, the
IP address of the machine connected to a specific port on a switch?
I need to be able to monitor bandwidth used by co-located servers,
and I'd like to be able to determine which graph is for which server
without having to manually trace the cables back to the switches
(which could be a very time-consuming solution).

If anybody has done this before, or knows where I should look, please
let me know.

Thanks in advance for any assistance...
