That depends on some things...

Processor
Disk subsystem
Network connection
OS
mrtg implementation ("classic" - .log format vs. rrdtool format)

For my implementation, I have a single processor PIII800 with Raid 5 (~34 gb), 100mb, RedHat Linux, mostly rrdtool monitoring about 20,000 different targets - 18,000 being rrdtool and 2,000 being the old mrtg/rateup - and my loads are about 40%.  It also does the webhosting duties and Big Brother as well.

How many sites/devices can be effectively monitored by a single server
running mrtg?
