If your cable modem is snmp manageable (pretty unlikely) then you can directly query it for stats.
If you are using a linux firewall, though, the easiest way to get stats is to query that.
I have basic instructions available for monitoring linux stuff at http://netophilia.net - look at the oids and oids+mrtg sections.
It is also possible (if you are using ipchains/iptables) to monitor per protocol bandwidth - pretty nice to see. Feel free to contact me offlist if you need help with that.
