To answer the first question, yes you can, by the mac address.
If have a switch with the catalyst ios,
Ping the server, then do a show arp, that will tell you what port its plugg=
ed into.
And for the second question, I am doing both, but it depends on your enviro=
nment

Subject: [mrtg] Switch Ports
Is there a way to determine what server IP's are on what port of a switch? =
We colocate our servers and think they are providing us with the wrong IP'=
s for the wrong ports.
Another question along the same lines. Would you recommend monitoring serv=
ers individually with SNMP on each server or monitor them from ports of the=
switch? Is the only reason you wouldn't want to monitor by ports on a swi=
tch when you don't have a swich? Thanks!
