To answer the first question, yes you can, by the mac address.

If have a switch with the catalyst ios,

Ping the server, then do a show arp, that will tell you what port its plugg=
ed into.


And for the second question, I am doing both, but it depends on your enviro=
nment

Is there a way to determine what server IP's are on what port of a switch? =
 We colocate our servers and think they are providing us with the wrong IP'=
s for the wrong ports.  

Another question along the same lines.  Would you recommend monitoring serv=
ers individually with SNMP on each server or monitor them from ports of the=
 switch?  Is the only reason you wouldn't want to monitor by ports on a swi=
tch when you don't have a swich?  Thanks!
