[mrtg] MaxBytes and Max Speed

Does anyone know how the cfgmaker gets the MaxBytes from the router?  We have an ATM connection to our provider with a 10 meg feed.  The router looks like it is set up correctly as far as the speed goes but, the .cfg file shows a MaxBytes and Max Speed value of 5088000.  I was just wondering why they were different, and I want to make sure that our routers are set up correctly.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
