[mrtg] general question about mrtg.cfg format

When I'm doing the target line, and im putting in an OID, sometimes i see, 
like for processor utilization, you put the processor OID followed by an "&" 
and then the OID again (like .1.2.3.4.5.6&.1.2.3.4.5.6:public at localhost).  
But then i notice on something like hard drive usage it would have two 
different OID strings (like .1.2.3.4.5.6&.1.2.3.4.5.7:public at localhost)...  
what do each of the positions mean?  does there always have to be 2? can 
there be 3 or more, or just 1?
