[mrtg] What do the values in the "[]" mean?

When I'm reading through the online manual I see statements like this:

Target[asdf]

My question is what do the values inside of the "[]" represent? I didn't
see a definition before they are introduced in the manual so I'm not
sure what they mean.

Thanks for any info. BTW it might be a good idea to explain what they
mean before using them in examples to avoid confusion.
