Hi newest newbie ;-)

Indeed, you're right. If cfgmaker wrote a description of your system, then,
it's responding to SNMP (it's a standard MIB-2 OID).
Again, you're right, it MUST have been other things under the #### area with
system description. For example, if you want to monitor the in/out traffic,
you should have had something like : (this is an example of a device I have
here. Of course, it will be different for you).

### Interface 1 >> Descr: 'Corebuilder 9000-9 Port 1000BaseSX Layer 2
Switching Module, manuf: 3Com, Gigabit-Ethernet Port 1' | Name:
'Gigabit-Ethernet Port 1' | Ip: '' | Eth: '00-20-9c-1d-ac-d8' ###

Target[172.27.3.1_1]: 1:public at 172.27.3.1:
SetEnv[172.27.3.1_1]: MRTG_INT_IP="" MRTG_INT_DESCR="Corebuilder 9000-9 Port
1000BaseSX Layer 2 Switching Module, manuf: 3Com, Gigabit-Ethernet Port 1"
MaxBytes[172.27.3.1_1]: 125000000
Title[172.27.3.1_1]: Traffic Analysis for Port 1 Slot 12 -- Corebuilder 9000
PageTop[172.27.3.1_1]: <H1>Traffic Analysis for Port 1 Slot 12 --
Corebuilder 9000</H1>
 <TABLE>
   <TR><TD>System:</TD> <TD>Corebuilder 9000 in Hermes -1</TD></TR>

   <TR><TD>ifType:</TD> <TD>Gigabit Ethernet</TD></TR>
   <TR><TD>Max Speed:</TD> <TD>1 GBits/s</TD></TR>
 </TABLE>

If not, then it's normal that mrtg start, but don't create any html and
image files...

The reason, for me, is that your device doesn't respond in the standard
interface MIB, or that cfgmaker wasn't been able to catch this. So, to be
sure, you should check the following OID, with snmpget or snmpwalk :

.1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.2 (Interface Description)
.1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10 (In Octets)
.1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.16 (Out Octets)

Cheers.

Subject: [mrtg] I am the newest newbie! I am not certain where to go
from here . ..

Hi all. I have just compiled MRTG and created my first mrtg.cfg
file. I am not certain where
to go from here or if I need to back up and fix something I broke or missed
the first time.

The confige file was created with this:

./cfgmaker --global "WorkDir: /opt/mrtg/bin/test" \
--global "Options[_]: bits,growright" \
--ifref=ip \
--output /opt/mrtg/mrtg_configs/mrtg.cfg \
public at w.x.y.z

where w.x.y.z is there real IP address of my snmp device.

The above cfgmaker created this file:

# Created by
# ./cfgmaker --global 'WorkDir: /opt/mrtg/bin/test' --global 'Options[_]:
bits,growright' --ifref=ip --output /opt/mrtg/mrtg_configs/mrtg.cfg
public at 172.16.238.146

### Global Config Options

# for UNIX
# WorkDir: /home/http/mrtg

# or for NT
# WorkDir: c:\mrtgdata

### Global Defaults

# to get bits instead of bytes and graphs growing to the right
# Options[_]: growright, bits

WorkDir: /opt/mrtg/bin/test
Options[_]: bits,growright

######################################################################
# System: xoienv1
# Description: Falcon, Environmental Monitor by RLE Technologies
# Contact: uninitialized
# Location: uninitialized
######################################################################

This makes me think the snmp device was actually reached and provided some
information. Should there be more?

I then ran:

./mrtg /opt/mrtg/mrtg_configs/mrtg.cfg --logging /var/log/mrtg.log

In the mrtg.log file it gives a date and time stamp and says "Started mrtg".
I think this is good. When I
check the process table mrtg is not there. Does it just run one time and
stop? No files are created in
the WorkDir. I would think there should be something?

I have never used mrtg before nor do I have any snmp experience. So I
suspect I am missing the big picture
as well as some/many other the little pictures. Like OID's! I played
Asteroids once, but I don't think
this is the same thing. ;-)

Any advice on my next steps(s) and documentation overviews on snmp/mrtg
would be helpful. I have
read the mrtg web site, but I was hoping for something a little more high
level. I am also reading
an artical on snmp which is heping some.

Thanks all!

Norm Clary
