[mrtg] what am I seeing

I've just installed mrtg and was curious about something.  The machine
that it is installed on will in a few days be used to look at networks
traffic.  Many articles have recommend using mrtg so I decided to give
it a go.

Now my question is this computer is on a subnet but is not used as a
gateway, bridge, router etc.  So my in and out on the stats from mrtg is
only what is in and out from the machine it is running on or can it be
the traffic passing by the machine on the network?
