i personally have found that rpm's for programs like
mrtg/netsaint/freeradius are better left to those who have no idea what do
do.
i tried the netsaint and freeradius rpms and had nothing but problems. i
tried mrtg from the tar.gz and had it working in about an hour(lord knows
how long if i would have used an rpm)

most tarball's have good install instructions and you can easily customize
your file locations and also what type of extra support you need right from
the compile.
i don't like the way most of the rpms allocate the program files. i like to
keep most of my programs in the same area.
