Look in the contribs directory for the smtp-stat script. It give a good
example on how to pull data from machines not running snmp but using inetd.
Be vary care if using this acroos the internet or over an unsecure network.
This could possibly open holes in your network if you dont know what your
doing. I have used it to create scripts to pull
cpu, disk,io,httpd,vm,sar, mail statistics, plus a few for informix
databases and other inhouse software.

Basically if you write script or have a program that spits output to the
screen, you can send it to a port too. Then from anoth box (where MRTG is
running) telnet machine port# and you should see the same output as if you
executed it from the command line.

Subject: [mrtg] needing scripts for Monitoring Samba and other non-SNMP
items

I am looking for a repository of scripts and tools for modification to
monitor things that are not currently SNMP supported on Linux (AFAIK).
I am not very good with scripting, yet, but am definitely willing to
learn. I would appreciate the help.

Thanks
