[mrtg] Monitoring errors on Cisco Catalyst and 7603

Hello all,
 
Is there somebody who has experience in monitoring errors one a darkfiber
connected to either a catalyst 5500 or a 7603.
Please let me know how to do it because I am looking for days now and I am
stuck.
