OK, new config file. Did you by any chance also change something in
the target line? Perhaps the interface you're monitoring now has an
other number?
Try to copy the current mrtg.cfg and the previous mrtg.log files into
a 3rd directory and run mrtg on that copy too. If it behaves like the
original instance it most likely is a corrupt log file despite the
absence of warnings. If it behaves like the 2nd instance, it probably
is a changed config on the restarted device.

It is possible, by hand, to merge two log files. For the long story
you'll have to dig in the archives of this list. In short:
1) sync the two log files to the same time by running mrtg on both
of them at the same time
2) take the top of the current log file and the bottom of the previous one
3) test, and revert to your backed up copy if necessary
