When running mrtg as a service on Windows, you need full path names, such
as:
d:\perl\bin\perl d:\mrtg\bin\mrtg --logging=eventlog d:\mrtgcfg\mrtg.cfg
A downside to running mrtg as a service is that if you make a change to a
config file, you need to stop and start the service for the change to take
effect.
I use a cron utility installed as a service to launch my different instances
of mrtg every five minutes. There are a lot of these types of utilities
around; the one I use is from aintx. This is somewhat hard to find, because
the author's web site (http://maxx.mc.net/~jlh/nttools.htm) is offline. Try
http://www.faq.net.pl/binaries/tools/TOOLSET/AINTX/,
http://www.dwam.net/docs/aintx,
http://www.swynk.com/trent/Files02/aintx.zip.

Subject: [mrtg] Running MRTG as a Service on Win2k
Hello everyone,
I just installed and configured MRTG on a windows 2000 server. However,
I haven't been able to run it as a service, using tools from the
Resource Kit (inetsrv.exe and srvany.exe). The service is created just
fine, but I am having problems running it with the needed parameters
(wperl mrtg --logging=eventlog mrtg.cfg).
Has anyone been successful in doing this, and if so, could you please
share your knowledge and experience?
Thanks in advance,
Nikola
