Ang,

You can use the ucd-snmp program snmpd to calculate the ram amount
then use a standard mrtg cfg to read the snmp mib.

The one you are interested in is.

1.3.6.1.2.1.25.2.3.1.6.101&1.3.6.1.2.1.25.2.3.1.5.101
for used and total free ram memory.

( I am guessing unix as you mentioned rsh )
