}
}Hi -
}
}I'm trying to get some more information I can read about how /
}why ifnum can
}change in a Cisco router. Cisco tells me its only if a add/del an
}interface, and then, not in every case. I'm seeing behaviour
}which suggests
}its a little more random. Can anyone suggest a source for
}further reading
}on this topic?
}
}I've converted my mrtg cfgs to anchor based on interface ip
}address, but
}that creates some new challenges for me on some interfaces
}that don't have
}IP addresses. If you have any suggestions on how to handle a
}device where
}some interfaces of interest have IP and some do not, I appreciate your
}guidance on that as well.
}

My suggestion (and practice) is to not reference anything by instance
number. I use description or name like...

For IOS based ciscos I use:
cfgmaker --ifref=descr

For catOS based ciscos I use
cfgmaker --ifref=name
