Yes, indeed the DNS entry is gone.  I sent an email to 
Tim Kennedy (the owner of mrtg.org) but have not yet
received a response so I don't know what happened and

This isn't in the FAQ (if I recall correctly).  AFAIK this is described
in the manual page for MRTG... checking...  yes.
Just RTFM->reference manual->per target->port
