It seems that you "forgot" to RTFM. Both "problems" are described
in there.
The answers to both questions are "yes". However, this doesn't help
you so I'll answer the questions you didn't ask:
Q:Do I need to use gauge?
A:Yes, you do because you are not monitoring a counter and this you
need to tell to mrtg.
Q:How do I need to format the output of the shell script?
A:This is described in the manual and can be found at
http://people.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/reference.html
Look for the part called "External monitoring scripts".
Q:How can I change the text on the left of the image?
A:This is described in the manual and can be found at
http://people.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/reference.html
Look for the part called YLegend.
You almost asked this:
Q:How can I see that MRTG collected the number?
A:The first line of the .log file should contain the input that
mrtg received. If that's there and the rest of the .log file
has nothing but zeros, chances are you should use gauge or you
should alter your maxbytes setting.
