[mrtg] Graphing an interface

I am trying to minitor a specific interface and I have a perl script that goes out and poll the eth0-interface and get the TX and RX packets.  The only option that I used in the cfg file was growright.  THe graphs are ever increasing and they should not be.  Since I am reading ever increasing counter, I was hoping that mrtg would display them like the counters on the monitored routers.

Any suggestions?
