[mrtg] router subinterface snmp weirdness

Ok,
I have a 3640 router with the 2nm-fe= (2port 10/100 card) running
12.1.5T IOS. Under a previous setup, I was able to "grab" all the
subinterfaces just fine. Now, the router is in a new home (my
networks seem to follow me around town  - long story). It will not
see the sub-ints. the 3 things that are different are :
sub-int encapsulation changed from isl to dot1q, the community name
and the mrtg server is a linux box (running rh 7.2 and mrtg 2.9.17)
instead of a win2k server running mrtg 2.9.17.
