ping will still try to map the IP# to a name (at least on Solris):

ping -s 172.19.156.128
PING 172.19.156.128: 56 data bytes
64 bytes from rubycon (172.19.156.128): icmp_seq=0. time=0. ms
64 bytes from rubycon (172.19.156.128): icmp_seq=1. time=0. ms
^C
----172.19.156.128 PING Statistics----
2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip (ms)  min/avg/max = 0/0/0


See how ping does print the name "rubycon"

If I use the option -n for ping, it does not lookup the IP#:

ping -ns 172.19.156.128
PING 172.19.156.128 (172.19.156.128): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 172.19.156.128: icmp_seq=0. time=1. ms
64 bytes from 172.19.156.128: icmp_seq=1. time=0. ms
64 bytes from 172.19.156.128: icmp_seq=2. time=0. ms

round-trip (ms)  min/avg/max = 0/0/1
