[mrtg] Running mrtg as daemon process

I am having a problem with mrtg crashing.  I have set it up to run as a
daemon process,
with the following config

interval : 300
forks : 4

The error message I get is : 

2002-01-29 09:50:19 -- ERROR: fork 1 has died ahead of time ...

If I comment out the forks command, mrtg runs just fine.

It is running on Tru64, 4.0f pk 6.

Have other people encountered this problem ?, if so is there a work around,
or another setting
I need to make ?
