[mrtg] help with "gauge" or something else to adjust behavior

Greetings:

I read the FAQ, searched the archive. Unfortunately, I found one similar
(unanswered) question. So here goes:

I have an application I'm monitoring with mrtg. I produce the data in a
file externally. I have a perl script that reads the data from the file.
The mechanics of this are working fine.

I would like to have the absolute maximum over the last 5 minutes on the
hourly graph but as I understand it, I can't. In lieu of that. I would at
least like to have the actual instantaneous value as sent to/checked by
mrtg.

For instance if the script sends:
161
8
empty
xxx12

I'd like to see 161 and 8 in the current values on the graph.

But my mrtg hourly graph does not reflect 161 and 8 as the current values,
instead they are off slightly. I assume this is because they were averaged
with previous values.

I thought "gauge" was to do away with this, maybe not. Is there a way I can
set my config file to behave as I want?

Thanks very much for the help,
Scott
