I guess the best analogy is that it is a password.  There are generally
two community strings - a read string (defaults to "public") and a write
string (defaults to "private").  Community strings in version 1 of the
protocol (snmpv1) are transmitted in plain text.  In version 2 and
version 3 of the protocol things are different, but don't worry as most
devices support at least version 1.
