the logfiles (old and new) get filled with insanely big numbers ...
this seems to happen on freebsd and on windows ... it seems to work
on netbsd (I think) and solaris (I know) and linux (I think)

I have no idea what is causingthis ... to debug I would run rateup
under ddd control and follow a value through to see when it goues
out of whak .... as things seem to compile fine without warning, I
guess it must be something minor on these platforms ....

unfortunately as I said I have no clue as to what could be cuasing
this ...
