[mrtg] Monitoring amount of traffic

Hi,
a bit off-topic maybe, but can anyone suggest a good alternative
method to monitor the total amount of data trasferred through a
router, rather than the trasfer rate (which is what MRTG does)?
I'll have to use a _Win98_ client for this, unfortunately.

I suppose I could extrapolate the amount of data from MRTG's average
values, but I'm having some problems with MRTG (see next post).
