I monitor our Cisco switches, as gabrielle said, as long as it supports
SMTP, MRTG can graph it.

Just run cfgmaker on your switch, and it will create the config to graph
traffic for every port on that switch.
Gets a bit long on 48 port switches though ;)

the data which should be monitored via MRTG. People are using MRTG, to

You are going to need to know the model #s and OS of the switches you want
to monitor to figure out which MIBs to use.

Assuming your switches are Cisco as well:

Pick your switch, find out which MIBs are supported, and go from there.

You will probably find a MIB Browser useful.  I would recommend that you
search the list archives for this (it was discussed recently).

On my switches, I monitor:
ifInOctets & ifOutOctets (default mrtg)
CPU (from CISCO-PROCESS-MIB [cat5500 & cat6500] and OLD-CISCO-CPU-MIB
[2900s])
SysTraffic (from the CISCO-STACK-MIB [cat5500 & cat 6500] and
CISCO-C2900-MIB [2900 series])
Temperature (from CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB [cat6500])

There are lots of postings in the archive about how to set up mrtg to
monitor things exactly the way you want.  Check it out, dink around with it
a bit, and come back if you have more specific questions.
