Netsaint/Nagios is definately something you want to have a look at.

i am using in our school board environment to monitor 1300 devices and
provide notification.  Super-flexible, rock-solid, and free.

This is a little off topic but I have been asked to present a 1/2 day
workshop on Network Monitoring (and Management)  Naturally, MRTG will be
highlighted.  The focus group will be network administrators for K-12
School Districts (in Indiana).

Are there other tools that are cheap and/or free that you can suggest.
Personally, I use WhatsUp Gold and TNT Event Log Monitor.  Thanks for
being a great resource.
