The RRDTool documentation is somewhat confusing, but you might want to
look at the 'create' document.  The "Duration" is set when you create each
RRA that is located in a RRD.  Below is a link to some documentation that
I created for our company.

I'm working on a revision for public use (currently, it documents how to
configure to McLane Company specifications).  You may want to look at the
section "Sizing RRDs" and see if that might help some.  Once you get the
calculations figured out, you can set the "duration" for however long you
want.  You might also check out the RRD_calculator at the NMIS site:
http://www.sins.com.au/nmis/rrd_calc.xls

You enter how long you want to keep the data, and it gives you the code.
