[mrtg] Some basics

I am completely new at this thing and would like to learn configuring about mrtg. 
None of the examples seem to work which are given on different websites.
What I can't figure out is how this all happens. There are commands  given everywhere but nowhere I saw any place describing the working of MRTG with SNMP .

it is hindering my understanding and the configuring the thing for my linux box.

Kindly help me out.
