I've taken to writing templates that make the entries look right.  Try

A sample command would be:
/usr/local/mrtg-2/bin/cfgmaker --ifref=name --ifdesc=alias
--subdirs=tlc/HOSTNAME --if-template=5500.template public at tlc-5500-3
--output=tlc-5500-3.cfg

e.g:
