That it the easy part.  Once you get a reliable number, MRTG will
happily process it for you.  Just use GAUGE and make the number
available to MRTG (for instance through the external program interface).

What is availability?  Do you consider a device to have been up for
five minutes if you can ping it "now" ?  Is your mailserver up just
because you can ping it?  Is your proxyserver down just because you
cannot connect to a part of the Internet?
