Naveen,

Device availability is a complex subject. Normally it will involve
collecting and comparing several parameters on a device and then checking
for threshold crossings. Availability is a special case of Performance
Management in that respect.

If you have a large network, the next level would be to group devices and
consolidate the status from several devices into a single "group
availability". And ultimately a "system or service availability" number.

As a simple alternative, ping probes are commonly used, however, they give a
limited view of device availability. For example, if device responds to a
ping probe it means you have IP connectivity from the management station to
the device. This may not be a sufficient statement for many of the other
services which are crossing the device. Again, if you have a large network,
you may need a method for consolidating the information.

In other words, to use MRTG for this, you would have to write pre-processing
scripts that would perform all of the collection and calculations and then
feed the numbers to MRTG.
