[mrtg] SNMP timeout and retry values

I want to amend the default SNMP timeout and retry values. Can I configure the default with the MRTG script? The only way I can see to do it is to add the :::2:1: value after the string at 1.2.3.4 target value. I'm not currently using these parameters within the config files.
