Use rrdtool as the backend with the interval set to 1 and extend the
rrds according to the instructions in routers2.cgi.  That will at least
give you six hour graphs.

If you need better resolution than that, then you should use a different
tool.  MRTG is a long-term baselining tool (strategic) not a short-term
tactical tool.
