There are much better solutions where only alerting is required.  I use
Big Brother (http://bb4.com/) but there are several others - Big Sister,
Nagios, etc.

BB's default activity is to check connectivity (ping or fping) from a
server and alert via a colour-coded web page, email, SMS, pager or
whatever.
