[mrtg] smoothing an outage

Is there a way to not get a large graphing spike following an inability to
reach a remote device?  I have remote equipment I monitor and if I loose
the ability to connect for 30 minutes, the next time I connect I get 6
times the normal value back.  Is there a way to suppress that?

Presently I manually edit the log file to bring my scale back in line.  I
suppose I can hard set my scale and just have a 100% spike, but is there a
better way to deal with it?
