the grey and black blob stuff is an indication MRTG had no data
for that time period. sounds like your data retrieval process
is not working correctly.

I'd reccomend writing a script to extract the data instead of using
the script commands directly from MRTG, and have the script write
to a log file at the same time(timestamp it as well) to determine
what times MRTG was getting data and what exactly it retrieved.
