[mrtg] Incorrect values being logged

I have a script which mrtg calls, to do email statistics. After the
first run, everything is fine. However, subsequent runs result in
incorrect data, to extreme values. An example from one of the log files:

1062683917 0 0
1062683917 0 0 0 0
1062683915 4294967296 -4629709505087668224 2885590476650446848 0
1062683700 4294967296 -4629709505087668224 2885590476650446848 0
1062683400 4294967296 -4629709505087668224 2885590476650446848 0

My script always outputs '0\n0\nuptime\nhost\n' (\n meaning newline), or
numeric values if they exist at the time the script is run. I've no
idea how to debug this, so I've decided to come to the list for help.
What could the problem be? Suggestions, ideas, etc, are all welcome.
