[mrtg] Bits Option

I'm looking at using the bits option to monitor bandwidth.  Everything else looks to bandwidth in bits not bytes so I'm always looking at the number and trying to change it in my head.  My question is does the bits option change the value stored in the log file or does it only change the value rateup uses to create the graph?
