MRTG isn't particularly demanding. Network delays with the SNMP queries
are usually more likely to limit how many devices you can monitor than the
CPU power of your box is (at least IMHO with a WAN). We use a dual Athlon
1.2 GHz machine here with a bit shy of a gig of RAM, and it is *way*
overkill for the 300-400 or so interfaces we are monitoring, and that
includes a lot of special perl scripts to watch some custom built devices.

Just split your MRTG config into several smaller files with fewer
interfaces and you should be able to run on whatever machine you have
laying around as long as it can handle your OS.
