For the long version: search the archives and/or the internet.

Short version:

Keep the two files current, that is: both should be recently updated.

Backup, backup, backup.

Take the first "n" lines of the new logfile and remove the last 'm' lines,
take the last "m" lines of the old loggile and remove the first 'n' lines,
merge and store as the new log file.

Where to cut?  You probably want to remove the lines from the new logfile
that are empty and replace them with lines from the old logfile that have
the same timestamp.
