dunno but this is a possible lead on what might be the problem, 

as we all know mrtg is snmp dependant, well at least in this scenario.
snmp is UDP based and if your network has a heavy traffic going on, 
the UDP packets can get lost, hence MRTG never receives the snmp 
data at that point, hence it doesnt log anything at that point, to what 
i recall
at that point MRTG tends to just continues drawing the same line of data 
as to
the last successfull snmp data retrieval,
