[mrtg] MRTG not communicating with C6509

I have occasional problems with MRTG and I hate it when the problems
magically fix themselves -- I don't know what went wrong or how to fix
it next time. In other words, I haven't always learned from experience.

Yesterday I discovered that I have no data on two of my C6509s since
Tuesday at 10:25. A third C6509 in the same rack works fine. Today I
found another switch, a C3550-12G, that has not been recording data
since January 11 at 14:25.

>From my MRTG box, I can ping all of the switches and I can telnet into
each of them. I'm assuming this means I have a good route between the
devices. What I can't figure out is what would cause the communications
to suddenly stop.

Can anyone offer any troubleshooting tips? I would like to understand
the what's going on as well as get the problem fixed.
