[mrtg] RRD graph generation very slow

Hello,
 
I'm using mrtg-rrd on a Sun server and am trying to figure out why things are running so slow.  Pulling up a page with 5 graphs on it takes upwards of 10 seconds.  During this time I can run "top" and see 0% of the CPU is idle, and the httpd processes appear to be the culprits.  Once the page is done loading the CPU goes to 98% idle.
 
Any recommendations on how to speed things up?
