thanks for your answer.

Options, as I understand them are used to modify the appearance of the
graph, and do not influence the SNMP communication.

I tried following your advice, but without result I fear.

Using the debug options clearly shows the SNMP communication doesn't work:

- --snpo: SNMPGet from public at localhost --
ssCpuRawUser.0,ssCpuRawIdle.0,sysUptime,sysName
Unknown SNMP var ssCpuRawUser.0
 at /usr/bin/mrtg line 2035
Unknown SNMP var ssCpuRawIdle.0
