The official way to do this is to use the ConversionCode feature - see the MRTG manual for details; there is even an example given of doing just this very thing (converting a string to a number from SNMP)

Subject: [mrtg] newbie question: how to convert string -> value?
Hi all,
A very basic/newbie question from me: I have an SNMP query (load average)
which returns:
STRING: 0.35
How do I configure this in mrtg.conf so that I get something I can graph?

Greetings,
Evert
