Of course this is open for discussion.

For all of these changes: do they need to be in the RRD file?
I appreciate the fact that it is handy to have all data in one
file but OTOH if this is at the cost of losing compatibility
we could come to the conclusion that an extra file, not round
robin, could be the proper solution.  I'm thinking about

   repeat
      <extention_number><extention_length><extention_data>
   until extention_number == 0

perhaps preluded by

   <index_length>
   foreach present extention
      <index_into_extention>
   <index_separator>

for fast skipping over data.

Numbers should be sufficiently large (32bit, or even ascii).
